Featured artists: Diane Gamboa, Gronk, Clement S. Hanami, Judithe Hernandez, Willie Herron, Kent Twitchell, John Valadez, Patssi Valdez
May 20-August 19, 2011

When I spoke with Diane Gamboa last night she was telling a story about her experience as an East Los Angeles College alumni.  She said she was not one of the best students during her time, but she did spend many hours with the artwork on inventory at the original Vincent Price Museum. She said she would waunder through the stacks of paintings and study the "backs" of the paintings and how they were constructed.  She also mentioned that during a current interview for the the alumni show, an interviewer stopped in his tracks when she talked about the "backs" of paintings being one of her influences.

She also wished she had saved a small Henry Moore sculpture that is MIA.

There will be a future article dedicated to the exhibition.

Laws of Attraction-An Artists' Couples Show

Jeff Klarin (ink, acrylic on board)

Rebecca Johnson (photo-Dublin, Ireland )

Jeff Klarin and Rebecca Johnson are two artists featured at the current exhibition at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts.  The exhibition is dedicated to couples  who are also artists.  "Show business" can be hard on couples, especially when they are in the same business.  The art world is just as competitive even if it is with your sweetheart.  Rebecca and Jeff are partners in a design and art business called "Bughouse".  Their whole life is making, thinking, doing art whether it is commercial or fine art.   Making your own art is a highly personal, soul searching venture.  The artists in the exhibition are bravely sharing their space with their loved ones.  Can interdependence be the new art form?

Carlos Vargas Pigeon Series

The symbolism of pigeons is associated with the home and relationships.  Like the dove it can symbolize peace.  If a pigeons perches on your roof top, it is a sign that you will have a new relationship or that the one you have will remain stable.  If a pigeon is darting right at you in the square, you relationship needs to be looked at or re-examined.   Carlos Vargas is portraying dead pigeons to represent the grief that he is experiencing during his father's illness.  Is he the pigeon? Does he sometimes feel helpless regarding his father's condition? The artistic angst is a way of channeling the artists' feelings.  The average Joe does not have this kind of outlet.  Carlos' current work is available by appointment at his studio in Los Angeles.

Carlos is also an art teacher at Huntington Park High School where he has a former graduate.  He uses his experience with his neighborhood to encourage young artists to pursue their artistic dreams.

Jennifer Faist- Reflection

"Carousel" 2010 (17"x52"x1.5")
Ruth Bachofner Gallery
April 23-June 4, 2011
2525 Michigan Ave Suite G-2
Santa Monica, CA 90404

Jennifer Faist's current exhibition of minimal works, clean edges, pristine surfaces are reminiscent of various artists that have traveled and taught in southern California.  Artists like Tony DeLap, James Turrell, John McCracken and Robert Irwin work with similar content as seen in Faist's work.  The exception is that Faist is endeavoring to, " feminize" her work by including pieces of fabric in the layers of the work. The fabrics are designed to reflect Faist's feminine and nostalgic component.

The embedded patterns in Faist's work have a regional feeling of the tropics and the pacific coast.  Her palette is also influenced by local colors of lime/chartreuse, mango, citrine, pomegranate, and cherry tomato. The style of the patterns reminded me of designs from the l960's that you would find on women's clothing and drapery.  At the same time, like organic debris found in amber, the patterns personalize and balance Faist's minimal pieces and produce a timeless quality that allows the viewers to linger in thought.
